14.00 OUTLINE ON CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
a. What is classroom management and why is it important?
i. My definition of classroom management is the skills necessary to maintain a classroom environment that is
orderly, efficient and enjoyable for both the students and the teacher.
ii. If students don’t listen to you, refuse to cooperate, bother other students around them etc, not only is the students’ learning going to be affected, but you—as the teacher—are going to be stressed out.
iii. Goal: To create an orderly classroom environment of mutual respect and kindness.
a. Ultimately, your students act out for reasons. You may not know, understand, or agree with those reasons—they may not even know or understand themselves, they are kids after all.
b. The more you understand why a child is acting out, the more you can combat that behavior before it even begins.
c. Example: a child who interrupts, is loud, bothers other students, dances around the classroom, never does what you ask and makes your life miserable.
d. This doesn’t just apply to students who act out. It applies to students who give up easily, students who don’t try at all, students who refuse to participate in particular activities, etc.
Докладчик: JOHN CARLSON (Taiwan) - I am originally from the U.S. and moved to Taiwan in 2005. I have been an ELL teacher for about 14 years. Soon after I started teaching, I also took on a second job as an ESL editor at a publishing company in Taiwan. I quickly became frustrated with the materials and methods my school was using as well as the materials the publishing company was producing. In late 2007, I started my own school. I was going to do things differently by throwing everything I thought I knew out the window and starting from scratch. I talked with everyone and anyone who taught and tested everything with our students in the classroom. I wrote our own materials and revised them over and over again based on teacher feedback and student results.
Last year, I started the Kid-Inspired Classroom because I figured I could help other teachers save some time trying to figure some of these things out on their own. I love helping teachers. I love seeing the smiles on their faces when they have been having great classes. I love making whatever small difference I can in people’s lives because others have done that for me and it has made all of the difference.
